Inspirational Quotes by Winthrop W. Aldrich (American Banker, Diplomat)

Winthrop Williams Aldrich GBE (1885–1974) was an American banker and financier, scion of a prominent and politically influential Aldrich family. He also served as the U.S. Ambassador to the United Kingdom (1953–57) under President Dwight D. Eisenhower.

Born in Providence, Rhode Island, Aldrich was the son of U.S. Senator (1881 to 1911) Nelson W. Aldrich. Winthrop’s siblings included brother Richard (who served in Congress 1923–33,) sister Lucy Aldrich (who was a prominent art collector,) and sister Abby Aldrich (who married oil tycoon John D. Rockefeller, Jr.)

Aldrich graduated from Harvard College in 1907 and Harvard Law School in 1910. He joined a New York law firm, was admitted to the bar in 1912, and became a junior partner in the firm in 1916. After serving in the U.S. Navy 1917–18 and returning to law practice in 1919, specializing in cases arising from finance and banking. He devoted most of his time to handling legal matters for the Equitable Trust 1922–30.

In 1930, the Equitable Trust, with over $900 million in assets, was consolidated with Chase National Bank to form America’s mightiest bank with Aldrich as president. Under Aldrich’s watch, Chase National built nearly $5 billion in assets by 1947. He severed business associations in 1953 to serve as the U.S. Ambassador to the United Kingdom. He returned home in 1957 and oversaw the business interests of the Rockefeller family as the uncle of the five Rockefeller brothers, including John D. Rockefeller III, Nelson Rockefeller, and David Rockefeller.
