Inspirational Quotes by Max Ehrmann (American Poet)

Max Ehrmann (1872–1945) was an American writer, poet, and attorney best known for his inspirational prose poem Desiderata (1927.) His works explored spirituality, personal growth, and philosophical reflection.

Born in Terre Haute, Indiana, Ehrmann was of German descent. He studied English at DePauw University, where he edited the school newspaper, then pursued philosophy and law at Harvard University. After returning to Indiana, he practiced law and worked in his family’s business before fully dedicating himself to writing at 40.

His literary career spanned poetry, essays, and philosophical reflections. Early works include A Farrago (1898,) The Mystery of Madeline le Blanc (1900,) and A Fearsome Riddle (1901.) He gained recognition with Breaking Home Ties (1904) and Who Entereth Here (1907,) which reflected his poetic style. His most famous work, Desiderata, written in 1927, gained widespread popularity posthumously.

Other publications include A Prayer and Selections (1906,) Max Ehrmann’s Poems (1906,) and The Wife of Marobuis (1922.)
