Inspirational Quotes by Louis Nizer (American Lawyer, Author)

Louis Nizer (1902–94) was an American lawyer and author. As one of the most celebrated trial lawyers of the 1960s, he gained renown for his courtroom work, his oratory in and out of the courtroom, and his best-selling autobiographical books.

Born in London, Nizer graduated from the Columbia School of Law 1924. He was an expert on contract, libel, divorce, and antitrust law. His expertise in the areas of law related to the arts, including copyright and plagiarism, attracted clients from the theatrical and motion picture fields. He rapidly gained the loyalty of the movie industry and represented such stalwarts as Charlie Chaplin, Mae West, Salvador Dali, and Johnny Carson. In 1928, he was appointed an attorney and executive secretary of the industry’s trade association.

Nizer’s memoirs include My Life in Court (1961,) The Jury Returns (1966,) and Reflections without Mirrors: An Autobiography of the Mind (1979.) He also wrote New Courts of Industry: Self-Regulation under the Motion Picture Code (1935,) Thinking on Your Feet: Adventures in Speaking (1940,) What to Do with Germany (1944,) and The Jury Returns (1966.)

Nizer is the subject of the play A Case of Libel (1963) written by Henry Denker.

In 1994, The Carnegie Council on Ethics in International Affairs established the Nizer Lectures on Public Policy.
