Inspirational Quotes by Louis Farrakhan (American Religious Leader)

Louis Farrakhan (b. 1933,) born Louis Eugene Walcott, formerly Louis X, was an American religious leader and nationalist. The leader of the Nation of Islam since 1978 and an African-American nationalist, he is known for advocating black separatism and black economic power.

Born in New York City, Farrakhan joined join Malcolm X’s Black Muslim movement. The sect was plagued by factionalism, and in 1978 Farrakhan was excommunicated by the World Community of Islam. He revived the Nation of Islam, which promotes self-reliance, healthy eating, and abstinence from drugs. Elijah Muhammad, the Nation of Islam’s leader, gave Abdul Haleem Farrakhan his Muslim name.

Farrakhan was more radical than the leaders of the civil rights movement. He has been widely criticized for his anti-Jewish rhetoric. Still, the growing influence of his message of self-respect among African-Americans was demonstrated in the 1995 Million Man March in Washington, D.C.
