Inspirational Quotes by Jacques d’Amboise (American Dancer)

Jacques d’Amboise (1934–2021,) born Joseph Jacques Ahearn, was an American ballet dancer, choreographer, actor, and teacher. A soloist with the New York City Ballet 1953–84, d’Amboise was one of the finest male dancers of his era, admired for his energetic and athletic interpretations of both character and classical roles. He was the father of choreographer Christopher d’Amboise and actress and dancer Charlotte d’Amboise.

Born in Dedham, Massachusetts, d’Amboise studied at the School of American Ballet and joined New York City Ballet (NYCB) in 1950, becoming principal (1953–84.) Apollo (1957) was one of his finest roles. However, he also created leading roles in many other Balanchine ballets, including Western Symphony (1954,) Ivesiana (1954,) Episodes (1959,) Raymonda Variations (1961,) Movements for Piano and Orchestra (1963,) Who Cares? (1970,) and Davidsbündlertänze (1980.)

D’Amboise also appeared in several films, including Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (1954) and Carousel (1956.) He also appeared in the television production of Stravinsky and Balanchine’s Noah and the Flood (1962.) D’Amboise choreographed several ballets for NYCB, including The Chase (1963,) Tchaikovsky Suite (1969,) and Celebrations (1982.)

D’Amboise taught at the School of American Ballet from 1970 and became founder-director of the National Dance Institute (s.1976,) a New York-based nonprofit that brings dance into public schools. His autobiography is I Was a Dancer (2011.)
