Dhirubhai Ambani (1932–2002,) fully Dhirajlal Hirachand Ambani, was an Indian industrialist. He started his career in a menial job in Yemen and ambitiously built a conglomerate that runs the world’s largest grass-roots oil refinery. His sprawling Reliance Industries holds enormous influence over political and corporate India.

Born to a schoolteacher in a town in the state of Gujarat, Dhirubhai grew up in a two-room dwelling with an earthen floor. He learned the art of crafty business dealings in the British-Indian outpost of Aden, where he worked as a gas station attendant during the day and traded rice, sugar, and other commodities in the bazaars after hours.

After returning to India in the late 1950s, Dhirubhai started trading yarn with a nephew and moved to Bombay. His Reliance Industries grew from textile trading in the 1960s to textile manufacture in the 1970s, expanded to petrochemicals in the 1980s, and energy in the 1990s, and diversified into telecom and power in the 2000s.

Dhirubhai built his reputation as the most controversial, but the craftiest Indian businessman of his generation. He was the archetypal crony capitalist—he influenced politicians and bureaucrats in ways that let him run rings around India’s odious trade regulations. He became a champion for millions of India’s small stockholders who got prosperous by investing in his expanding business empire.

When Dhirubhai died in 2002 without leaving a will, Dhirubhai’s sons, Mukesh and Anil, split their father’s conglomerate in 2005. Mukesh kept petrochemicals and industrial groups, whereas Anil took control of the telecom, infrastructure, and finance businesses. Anil formed the Reliance Group or the Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group. Mukesh has proved the more successful of the two—in 2010, he marked his achievements by building a 27-story mansion in Mumbai.
