Inspirational Quotes by Charles Erwin Wilson (American Businessperson)

Charles Erwin Wilson (1890–1961) was an American engineer and businessman. Known as “Engine Charlie,” he was the president and CEO of General Motors (GM) 1946–53 and secretary of defense under President Dwight D. Eisenhower 1953–57.

Born in Minerva, Ohio, Wilson graduated with an electrical engineering degree in 1909 from Carnegie Tech University. He joined the Westinghouse Electric Company in Pittsburgh as an engineer of automotive electrical components. He supervised the development of dynamotors and radio generators for the U.S. Army and U.S. Navy during World War I.

In 1919, Wilson joined the GM subsidiary Remy Electric as its chief engineer and sales manager. He rose to become vice president of GM in 1928 and president in 1941. During World War II, Wilson directed GM’s outstanding performance in producing tanks, aircraft engines, trucks, and munitions. After the war, Wilson returned the company to peacetime auto production to accommodate the growing automobile demand. He also improved labor relations, creating an inflation-indexed wage and introducing a uniform pension plan for all workers—these set the standard for the entire auto industry.

As secretary of defense, Wilson played a limited role in shaping the nation’s military policies, especially since President Eisenhower set defense policies with his vast military experience. After his tenure, Wilson returned to the board of directors of General Motors. He served as chair of a civil rights commission in Michigan.
