Inspirational Quotes by Cole Porter (American Songwriter)

Cole Porter (1892–1964) was an American composer and lyricist who brought a sophisticated style and energetic confidence to the American musical. He embodied his songs’ sophistication in his life.

Born in Peru, Indiana, Porter studied law at Harvard before deciding upon a musical career. From his first hit on Broadway in 1929, he created a series of successful musical comedies, including Anything Goes (1934) and Du Barry Was a Lady (1939.)

Porter wrote both lyrics and music for many classics of American popular songs, such as ‘You Do Something to Me,’ ‘I Get a Kick Out of You,’ ‘You’re the Top’ and ‘Just One of Those Things.’ Many of his songs became standards renowned for their brilliant, sophisticated lyrics. Several of his scores found success on Broadway and in film.

In 1937, Porter was severely hurt in a riding accident, which left him in lasting pain. He had 30 surgeries and the eventual amputation of a leg. Nonetheless, he continued to compose, reaching the height of his success with Kiss Me Kate (1948) and Can-Can (1953.) His style ranges from the unabashed romanticism of ‘Night and Day’ (1932) to the comical wordplay and double entendre of ‘Too Darn Hot.’
