Inspirational Quotes by John Glenn (American Astronaut)

John Glenn (1921–2006,) fully John Herschel Glenn, Jr., was an American aviator, astronaut, and politician. He was a highly decorated combat pilot, a pioneering astronaut, and one of America’s longest-serving and most effective senators during his long career.

Born in Cambridge, Ohio, Glenn was educated at Maryland University. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1943 and served in the Pacific during World War II and later in Korea. In 1957, he completed a record-breaking supersonic flight from Los Angeles to New York.

Glenn became an astronaut in 1959, and in 1962 became the first American to orbit the Earth in a three-orbit flight in the Friendship 7 space capsule. He resigned from the Marine Corps in 1965 and, served as Democratic senator 1975–99 for Ohio.

Glenn’s long tenure as a U.S. senator reflected his solid legislative record. He was an early exponent of environmentalism; he also supported nuclear proliferation, the equal rights amendment to the constitution, and the right to an abortion. He sought the Democratic nomination for the presidency unsuccessfully in 1984 and 1988.

In 1998, Glenn took part in a flight of the space shuttle Discovery, becoming the oldest person to go into space. His autobiography is John Glenn: A Memoir (1999;) historian Alice L. George wrote The Last American Hero: The Remarkable Life of John Glenn (2020.)
