Susan Abigail Sarandon (b.1946,) née Tomalin, is an American actress. She’s had a long and successful career in Hollywood, starring in such films as Thelma and Louise, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and Dead Man Walking. She is also known for her enthusiastic support of progressive and leftist political causes.

Born in New York City, Sarandon studied drama at the Catholic University in Washington, DC, where she met her future husband, actor Chris Sarandon. She made her film début in Joe (1970.) She worked extensively in television soap operas and theatre before graduating to more notable cinema roles, including Janet in The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975.)

Sarandon received a Best Actress Award nomination for her role in Atlantic City (1980.) Still, good work eluded her until her casting in The Witches of Eastwick (1987) and Bull Durham (1988.) Frequently in demand as a mature woman presenting strong sexuality, her ensuing achievements include White Palace (1990,) Thelma and Louise (1991,) Lorenzo’s Oil (1992,) The Client (1994, BAFTA,) and Dead Man Walking (1995; Academy Award; directed by her then-off-screen partner Tim Robbins.)
