Inspirational Quotes by Jon Kabat-Zinn (American Meditation Teacher, Writer)

Jon Kabat-Zinn (b.1944) is an American meditation teacher, psychologist, and writer. This “father of secular mindfulness” is notable for his groundbreaking work on mindfulness meditation. Since 1979, Kabat-Zinn has led the proliferation of this ancient practice into the U.S. medical mainstream.

Born into a non-practicing Jewish family and raised in upper Manhattan, New York City, Kabat-Zinn started meditating while studying molecular biology at Massachusetts Institute of Technology after a talk by the Zen Buddhist Philip Kapleau in 1965.

Before long, while working as a University of Massachusetts psychologist, Kabat-Zinn attended a retreat organized by the Vietnamese-French Zen Buddhist monk and teacher Thích Nhất Hạnh. Integrating Hạnh’s teachings with yoga and medical science, Kabat-Zinn created the popular eight-week “Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction” course. Its acceptance widened and, over the decades, based on Kabat-Zinn’s work, other psychologists developed mindfulness-based interventions that allow patients to observe their cognitive and behavioral processes.

Kabat-Zinn is the author of many best-selling books on mindfulness, meditation, and other Eastern traditions, including Full Catastrophe Living (1991,) Wherever You Go, There You Are (1994,) Coming to Our Senses (2004,) and Meditation Is Not What You Think (2018.)

It is not that mindfulness is the answer” to all life’s problems. Rather, it is that all life’s problems can be seen more clearly through the lens of a clear mind.”
