Inspirational Quotes by David Halberstam (American Journalist, Historian)

David Halberstam (1934–2007) was an American journalist and historian. He wrote over 20 meticulously researched books on politics, history, business, media, culture, and sports. A staff reporter for The New York Times 1960–67, he received a Pulitzer in 1964 for his hard-hitting coverage of the Vietnam War.

Born in New York City, Halberstam earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Harvard University (1955,) where he served as the managing editor of the Harvard Crimson. Before joining The New York Times, he was a reporter for the Daily Times Leader in West Point, Mississippi, and the Nashville Tennessean.

Halberstam initially accepted the grounds for the Vietnam War but started doubting the official line and became confident that the war was ill-conceived and unjustified. The Making of a Quagmire (1965) echoed growing disillusionment with the war—this book’s title has become a motto for intractable military operations.

Halberstam’s analysis of power resulted in The Best and the Brightest (1972; about the failings of the military during the Vietnam War,) The Powers That Be (1979; about the media’s impact on history,) and The Reckoning (1986; an analysis of the automotive industry.) He was a Pulitzer finalist for War in a Time of Peace: Bush, Clinton, and the Generals (2001,) and he produced two books after the September 11 attacks: New York September 11: By Magnum Photographers (2001) and Firehouse (2002.)

Halberstam’s sports writing included The Summer of ’49 (1989; about the baseball rivalry between the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox) and Playing for Keeps: Michael Jordan and the World He Made (1999.)
