Bill McCartney (b.1940,) born William Paul McCartney, is an American football coach, evangelical leader, author, and founder of the Christian men’s movement Promise Keepers. He became widely known for his transformative tenure as head coach at the University of Colorado, where he led the Buffaloes to the 1990 national championship. He emerged as a major figure in American evangelical culture through writing, speaking, and organizational leadership.
Born in Riverview, Michigan, McCartney grew up in a sports-oriented family and studied education while playing football at the University of Missouri. After graduating, he began his career as a high school teacher and coach before moving into collegiate coaching as an assistant at the University of Michigan under Bo Schembechler. These early experiences shaped the motivational style and leadership philosophy that later defined both his coaching success and his approach to faith-based outreach.
McCartney’s national prominence expanded during his years at Colorado (1982–94,) where he revitalized the football program and later recounted his journey in From Ashes to Glory (1995.) After retiring, he founded Promise Keepers in 1990, an organization that produced influential works such as What Makes a Man? (1992) and drew massive crowds to stadium events focused on Christian commitment and accountability. His later publications, including Sold Out (1997,) reflected his deepening interest in spiritual leadership and personal transformation. His life and impact have been explored in biographies such as David Halbrook’s Coach Bill McCartney: A Legacy of Leadership (2001.)

If you want to take the meaning of the word integrity and reduce it to its simplest terms, you’d conclude that a man of integrity is a promise keeper. When he gives you his word. You can take it to the bank. His word is good.
