Inspirational Quotes by Catherine McAuley (Irish Religious Sister)

Catherine Elizabeth McAuley (1787–1841) was an Irish Catholic religious sister who founded the Sisters of Mercy in 1831. The women’s congregation has always been associated with teaching, especially in Ireland, where the sisters taught Catholics (and Protestants) when education was mainly reserved for members of the established Church of Ireland.

Born in Dublin, McAuley was left funds by her adoptive parents to establish a school for needy children and a residence for working women called House of Our Blessed Lady of Mercy (1827.) She launched the order of the Sisters of Mercy (1831.) In 1990, Pope John Paul II proclaimed McAuley “Venerable” as part of the Catholic Church’s sainthood process.

Rochester Institute of Technology’s Mary C. Sullivan wrote the scholarly biography The Path of Mercy: The Life of Catherine McAuley (2012.)
