Mohamed ElBaradei (b.1942) is an Egyptian lawyer and diplomat. He was the director-general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (1997–2009.) He was the winner, with his agency, of the 2013 Nobel Prize in Peace for their efforts to limit the spread of nuclear weapons.

Born in Cairo, ElBaradei studied law there and in New York before joining the Egyptian diplomatic service in 1964. In 1980, he joined the United Nations and, from 1984, was a senior member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Secretariat.

ElBaradei taught international law at New York University (1981–87,) lectured widely, and written books on international law, arms control, and the peaceful uses of nuclear energy. In 1997, he was appointed director-general of the IAEA and strengthened the organization’s role in monitoring nuclear weapons proliferation.

ElBaradei briefly served as the interim vice president of Egypt (2013.) His memoir is The Age of Deception: Nuclear Diplomacy in Treacherous Times (2011.)
