Inspirational Quotes by Lord William Russell (English Politician)

William Russell, Lord Russell (1639–83) was an English politician of the Country Party and later the Whig party. He laid the groundwork for the opposition in the House of Commons to the accession of King Charles II’s openly Catholic brother James (later James II.)

The third son of William Russell, 5th Earl and 1st Duke of Bedford, Lord Russell made the Grand Tour and was elected MP for Tavistock at the Restoration.

In 1674 Lord Russell spoke against the actions of the Cabal and became an active adherent of the Country Party. He led the attempt to exclude James II (then the Duke of York ) from the accession as a popish recusant.

Lord Russell was arrested with Robert Devereux, 2nd Earl of Essex, and Algernon Sidney for participation in the Rye House Plot, the Whig conspiracy to assassinate or mount an insurrection against Charles II of England because of his pro-Roman Catholic policies. Lord Russell was found guilty of high treason by a packed jury and was beheaded two years before Charles died and James acceded to the throne.
