Jerry Brown (b.1938,) fully Edmund G. Brown, Jr., is an American Democratic politician and lawyer. He was the governor of California 1975–83 and 2011–19. He was a leading candidate for the Democratic nomination for U.S. president 1976, 1980, and 1992.

Born in San Francisco, Brown graduated from Berkeley and Yale. He began his political career as a member of the Los Angeles Community College District Board of Trustees 1969–71 and California Secretary of State 1971–75.

Between his two stints as California’s governor, Brown was the mayor of Oakland, California 1999–2007 and California’s attorney general 2007–11.
