Clifford Odets (1906–63) was an American playwright, screenwriter, and director whose socially conscious dramas made him one of the defining voices of Depression-era theater. As a leading member of the Group Theatre, his works captured the struggles of working-class Americans and helped shape modern American drama.

Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Odets grew up in the Bronx, New York. He left high school to pursue acting and studied at the American Laboratory Theatre. His early career included work as a radio actor and stage performer before joining Harold Clurman, Lee Strasberg, and Cheryl Crawford in founding the Group Theatre in 1931. Odets’s breakthrough came with Waiting for Lefty (1935,) a one-act play dramatizing a taxi drivers’ strike, which electrified audiences with its call for social justice. His later plays, such as The Big Knife (1949) and The Country Girl (1950,) reflected his experiences in Hollywood and his evolving perspective on art and compromise. In addition to theater, Odets wrote screenplays, including None but the Lonely Heart (1944,) and directed films in the 1950s.
