Coretta Scott King (1927–2006,) née Scott, was an American singer, civil rights campaigner, and writer. The wife of civil-rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr., she took on an independent role in the civil rights movement in the years following her husband’s assassination in 1968.

Born in Marion, Alabama, and trained in music at the New England Conservatory, Coretta Scott King made her concert début in 1948. She married Martin Luther King, Jr. in 1953. Two years later, the Montgomery (Alabama) bus strike led the couple into the struggle for civil rights for black Americans.

After her husband’s assassination in 1968, Coretta continued her husband’s legacy of non-violent resistance by fighting successfully for a national holiday in his honor. She also established the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change.
