Inspirational Quotes by Edwin Hubble (American Astronomer)

Edwin Hubble (1889–1953) was an American astronomer. He examined galaxies and devised a categorization scheme for them based on their shape. In 1929, he hypothesized the universe’s expansion and proposed what is now known as Hubble’s Law with its constant of proportionality called the Hubble’s Constant.

Born in Marshfield, Missouri, Hubble studied mathematics and astronomy at the University of Chicago and law as a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford (1910–13.) He returned to the University of Chicago and held a research position at its Yerkes Observatory (1914–17.)

After volunteering in the U.S. Army during World War I, Hubble moved in 1919 to the Carnegie Institution’s Mount Wilson Observatory in California. He began his original investigations of the nebulae realm, which were little understood in his time. He found that spiral nebulae are independent stellar systems and that the Andromeda nebula, in particular, is comparable to our own Milky Way galaxy.

In 1929, Hubble proclaimed that galaxies recede from the Earth with speeds, increasing their distance. He hypothesized that the universe was expanding at a rate that could be calculated based on a constant, now known as the Hubble Constant. The linear relationship between the speed of recession and distance is known as Hubble’s Law.

Hubble remained at Mount Wilson until his death. He wrote The Realm of the Nebulae (1936,) explaining his theories of extragalactic astronomy.

Historian of science Gale E. Christianson wrote the biography Edwin Hubble: Mariner of the Nebulae (1995.) The 2.4-meter aperture Hubble Space Telescope, launched in 1990, is named in his honor.
