Inspirational Quotes by Dean Smith (American Basketball Coach)

Dean Edwards Smith (1931–2015) was an American men’s college basketball coach. He spent 36 seasons with the University of North Carolina (the “Tar Heels.”)

Born in Emporia, Kansas, Smith obtained a degree in mathematics from the University of Kansas. He also played college basketball at the University of Kansas under the legendary coach Phog Allen and won a national championship in 1952.

Smith coached the University of North Carolina Tar Heels 1961–97. With 879 career victories, he retired as the most successful men’s collegiate basketball coach. During his tenure as head coach, North Carolina won two national championships and appeared in 11 Final Fours.

Smith coached the U.S. men’s basketball team to a gold medal in the 1976 Olympics. His protégés include basketball Michael Jordan and James Worthy and basketball coaches Larry Brown and Roy Williams.

Smith coauthored Basketball: Multiple Offense and Defense (1982,) A Coach’s Life (1999,) and The Carolina Way: Leadership Lessons from a Life of Coaching (2004.)
