Inspirational Quotes by Jacinto Benavente (Spanish Dramatist)

Jacinto Benavente (1866–1954,) fully Jacinto Benavente y Martínez, was one of the foremost Spanish dramatists of the 20th century. He won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1922.

Born in Madrid, Benavente intended to enter the legal profession but turned instead to literature. After writing some poems and short stories, he won recognition as a playwright with his El nido ajeno (1893, ‘The Other Nest,’) followed by some brilliantly satirical society comedies. His masterpiece is Los intereses creados (1907, ‘The Bonds of Interest,’) a symbolic play in the commedia dell’arte style.

Benavente is celebrated for such plays as La Gobernadora (1901; ‘The Governor’s Wife,’) Rosas de otoño (1905; ‘Autumnal Roses,’) and particularly Señora ama (1908; ‘The Lady of the House’) and La Malquerida (1913; ‘The Wrongly Loved.’)

Benavente’s play Para el cielo y los altares (1928, ‘Toward Heaven and the Altars,’) prophesying the Spanish monarchy’s fall was banned by the state. During the Spanish Civil War, Benavente lived under arrest in Barcelona and Valencia.

Benavente showed a preoccupation with aesthetics and later with ethics. He also wrote several plays for children.
