Inspirational Quotes by Cecil B. DeMille (American Filmmaker)

Cecil B. DeMille (1881–1959,) in full Cecil Blount DeMille, was an American film producer and director. He is celebrated for films that were distinguished by their epic scale and by his cinematic showmanship.

Born in Ashfield, Massachusetts, DeMille was the cleric and playwright Henry Churchill DeMille’s son and the playwright William C. deMille’s brother. Cecil attended Pennsylvania Military College and New York’s American Academy of Dramatic Arts.

DeMille was a pioneer in the progression of silent movies from shorts to feature-length productions. He helped institute Hollywood as the new center of the filmmaking industry. As one of the few film producers whose name was a popular “draw,” he helped improve directors’ and producers’ standing within the film industry.

In all, DeMille made 70 films 1914–56, and all but six of them made money. His first great picture was Joan the Woman (1916; about Joan of Arc.) It lost money, but DeMille waited for many years before making another movie. His notable movies include The Ten Commandments (1923; one of the biggest moneymakers of the silent film era; remade, 1956) and Samson and Delilah (1949.)
