Inspirational Quotes by Erich Kastner (German Author)

Erich Kästner (1899–1974) was a German satirist, poet, and novelist who is primarily known for his children’s books. He was the most durable practitioner of the style of witty, laconic writing associated with the highbrow cabaret, the Berlin weekly Die Weltbühne (“The World Stage,”) and the Neue Sachlichkeit (New Objectivity) movement of the mid-1920s.

Born in Dresden, Kästner began his writing career with two volumes of verse, Herz auf Taille (1928, ‘Heart on Waistline’) and Lärm im Spiegel (1929, ‘Noise in the Mirror,’) both cleverly satirical. In 1933, his books were publicly burnt by the Nazis, but he continued to live in Germany.

Kästner’s novels include Fabian: Die Geschichte eines Moralisten (1931; Fabian: The Story of a Moralist, 1932) and Drei Männer im Schnee (1934; Three Men in the Snow, 1935.)

Kästner is best known for his delightful children’s books, including Emil und die Detektive (1928; Emil and the Detectives, 1930,) Pünktchen und Anton (1929; Annaluise and Anton, 1932,) and Das fliegende Klassenzimmer (1933; The Flying Classroom, 1934,) which gained him worldwide fame.

Kästner was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature four times. Among his later writings is the autobiographical Als ich ein kleiner Junge war (1957; When I Was a Little Boy, 1959; Hans Christian Andersen Medal, 1960.) Kästner’s collected works are Gesammelte Schriften (12 vol., 1959.)
