Paul Dickson (b.1939) is an American author whose writing has spanned various subjects, including baseball and the military. He has published more than 65 non-fiction books and books on the American language.

Born in Yonkers, New York, Dickson graduated from Wesleyan University in 1961 before joining the U.S. Navy and working as a reporter for McGraw-Hill Publications. Since 1968, he is a full-time freelance writer, contributing articles to various magazines and newspapers, including Smithsonian, Esquire, The Nation, Town & Country, The New York Times, Washingtonian, The Los Angeles Times, and The Washington Post.

Dickson’s books on American English language and popular culture include Think Tanks (1971,) The Official Rules (1978,) Sputnik: The Shock of the Century (2001,) Slang: The Topical Dictionary of Americanisms (2006,) The Hidden Language of Baseball (2007,) The Unwritten Rules of Baseball (2009,) and Words from the White House (2013.)
