Inspirational Quotes by Helena Rubinstein (American Cosmetician)

Helena Rubinstein (1882–1965,) born Chaja Rubinstein, was a Polish-born American beautician, entrepreneur, art collector, and philanthropist. Her company became a leading international cosmetics manufacturer and distributor.

Born in Kraków, Poland, Rubinstein studied medicine briefly in Switzerland before journeying in the late 1890s to visit relatives in Australia. She opened her first skin care salon in Melbourne, Australia, in 1902. Moving to London in 1908, she started expanding her business, launching salons in Europe and the United States. At the outbreak of World War I, she moved to New York City, where she opened a cosmetics salon in 1915.

By 1917, Rubinstein began the wholesale distribution of her products, which had grown beyond facial cream. Selling in department stores, Rubinstein insisted that only women with professional training in cosmetics could sell her products, and this part of the business grew to be the largest. Rubinstein retained total control of her company until her death, and her business savoir-faire afforded her a personal wealth of over $100 million. In 1973, the company Helena Rubinstein, Inc. was sold to Colgate-Palmolive and is now owned by L’Oreal.

Rubinstein wrote The Art of Feminine Beauty (1936,) This Way To Beauty (1936,) and Food for Beauty (1938.) Her autobiography is My Life for Beauty (1966.)
