Inspirational Quotes by Milton S. Hershey (American Businessman)

Milton Snavely Hershey (1857–1945) was an American industrialist and philanthropist who established the Hershey Chocolate Corporation. He also created the village in southeastern Pennsylvania that bears his last name and was instrumental in popularizing chocolate candy throughout much of the world.

Born in Hockersville, Pennsylvania, Hershey was apprenticed at age 15 to a confectioner in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. In 1876, Hershey ran his own candy shop in Philadelphia and then a candy manufacturer in New York City. Returning to Lancaster, Hershey created Lancaster Caramel Company to manufacture caramels with fresh milk.

In 1900, Hershey sold his caramel company for $1,000,000 and focused on chocolate bars. In 1903, he built the Hershey factory village and provided its employees with housing and public amenities. Over time, Hershey became the world’s largest chocolate manufacturing factory, with sales of $55 million in 1941.

Hershey turned over the bulk of his fortune to the M.S. Hershey Foundation in 1918. His chocolate bar was so famous that the company did not advertise it until 25 years after his death.

Biographies include Michael D’Antonio’s Hershey: Milton S. Hershey’s Extraordinary Life of Wealth, Empire, and Utopian Dreams (2007.)
