Inspirational Quotes by Jules Amedee Barbey d’Aurevilly (French Novelist)

Jules-Amédée Barbey d’Aurevilly (1808–89) was a French novelist, short story writer, poet, and literary critic, famed for his dandy persona and his provocative tales of passion, crime, and Catholic paradox. Known as “le Connétable des Lettres” (The Constable of Literature,) he influenced writers such as Henry James, Marcel Proust, and Léon Bloy.

Born in Saint-Sauveur-le-Vicomte, Normandy, Barbey inherited the name “d’Aurevilly” from a childless uncle. He studied at the Collège Stanislas in Paris (1827–29) and earned a law degree at Caen University (1833.) Initially a liberal and atheist, he later converted to Roman Catholicism in 1846 after frequenting the salon of Baronne Almaury de Maistre. His early career was precarious, writing for Parisian periodicals, but he soon established himself as a flamboyant dandy, cultivating aristocratic style and mystery.

Barbey’s literary output combined Romanticism, Gothic elements, and Decadence. His notable works include Le Chevalier des Touches (1864; The Knight of the Touches,) a novel set during the Chouan rebellion; Un Prêtre marié (1865; A Married Priest,) exploring the fate of a priest under revolutionary pressures; and his masterpiece Les Diaboliques (1874; The She-Devils,) a collection of six short stories depicting sinister passions and crimes. Earlier essays such as Du Dandysme et de George Brummell (1845; On Dandyism and George Brummell) established him as a theorist of style and identity. His criticism in Le Pays and later Le Constitutionnel helped rehabilitate Balzac and promote Stendhal, Flaubert, and Baudelaire.
