Inspirational Quotes by Elise M. Boulding (American Peace Scholar)

Elise Boulding (1920–2010,) fully Elise Marie Biorn-Hansen, was an American sociologist, pacifist feminist, and scholar who wrote extensively about conflict resolution in both personal and global relations helped establish the academic field known as peace studies.

Born in Oslo, Norway, Boulding moved to the U.S. at the age of three and graduated from Douglass College (now part of Rutgers University.) While raising five children, she completed her M.A. at Iowa State and PhD in Sociology at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor.

Boulding founded the International Peace Research Association with her husband, the English economist Kenneth Boulding. Boulding taught at Dartmouth and the University of Colorado at Boulder. She chaired the Sociology Department developed the nation’s first Peace Studies program there.

Boulding’s many books explored factors inherent in building a less martial world and advocated early education of children in nonviolent problem-solving: The Underside of History: A View of Women Through Time (1975,) Women in the Twentieth Century World” (1977,) Children’s Rights and the Wheel of Life” (1978,) and Cultures of Peace: The Hidden Side of History (2000.)
