Inspirational Quotes by Daisaku Ikeda (Japanese Philosopher)

Daisaku Ikeda (1928–2023) was a Japanese Buddhist philosopher, educator, author, and peace activist, best known as the third president of the Soka Gakkai and founding president of Soka Gakkai International (SGI.) He became one of the most influential Buddhist leaders of the twentieth century, promoting dialogue, education, and nuclear disarmament.

Born in Ōta, Tokyo, Ikeda’s youth was marked by hardship during World War II, including the death of his eldest brother in Burma. In 1947, at age 19, he encountered Nichiren Buddhism through Josei Toda, who became his mentor and inspired his lifelong commitment to peace and human revolution. Ikeda studied at Fuji Junior College (now Tokyo Fuji University) and began writing and lecturing while supporting the rebuilding of Soka Gakkai after wartime persecution. In 1960, at age 32, he succeeded Toda as president of Soka Gakkai, and in 1975 he founded SGI, which grew into a global network of more than 12 million members across 190 countries.

Ikeda’s publications include The Human Revolution (1964–94,) a multi-volume novel chronicling the growth of Soka Gakkai, and its sequel The New Human Revolution (1995–2018.) His dialogues with global thinkers produced works such as Choose Life (1976, with historian Arnold J. Toynbee,) Planetary Citizenship (2002, with economist Hazel Henderson,) and The Courage to Teach (2001, with educator Paulo Freire.) His poetry collections, including Songs for America (1979,) reflect his humanistic vision. He also issued annual peace proposals to the United Nations beginning in 1983.

Biographies such as scholar Olivier Urbain’s Daisaku Ikeda’s Philosophy of Peace (2010) and scholar Daniel A. Metraux’s The Soka Gakkai Revolution (1994) analyze his impact.
