Inspirational Quotes by Camille Pissarro (French Painter)

Camille Pissarro (1830–1903,) fully Jacob-Abraham-Camille Pissarro, was a Danish-French painter, printmaker, and graphic artist. He was a leading figure of the Impressionist and Neo-Impressionist movement, typically painting landscapes and cityscapes. He also experimented with pointillism in the 1880s.

Born in St Thomas, Danish West Indies, now in the U.S. Virgin Islands, he went in 1855 to Paris, where Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot’s landscapes much influenced him. In 1870 Pissarro lived in England for a short time, this being the first of several visits.

Most of Pissarro’s works were painted in the countryside around Paris, and he lived in Pontoise 1872–84. In the following year, he met Paul Signac and Georges Seurat, and for the next five years, adopted their Divisionist style. Pissarro was the leader of the original Impressionists and the only one to exhibit at all eight of the group exhibitions in Paris (1874–86.)

Pissarro was a supportive friend and mentor to influential artists such as Paul Cézanne and Paul Gauguin at the beginning of their artistic careers. His famous painting of the Boulevard Montmartre by Night (1897) is in the National Gallery, London.
