Inspirational Quotes by Dee Hock (American Businessman)

Dee Ward Hock (1920–2022) was an American financial businessman. He was the founder of the global payments company Visa.

Born in North Ogden, Utah, Hock ended his formal schooling after two years at a community college. Appointed in 1966 to run a new credit-card unit at National Bank of Commerce in Seattle, a licensee of BankAmericard, Hock discovered a pattern of consumer fraud, bad debts, and paperwork snarls. He arose as the leader of a committee of executives from 100 bank licensees. He convinced Bank of America to turn over the credit card service management to a new member bank-owned entity called National BankAmericard Inc.

Hock served as National BankAmericard 1970–84, helping it grow customer billings dramatically and gaining worldwide name recognition. After an employee contest in 1976, Hock renamed his company Visa Inc. At his death, Visa had 3.9 billion cards in circulation worldwide.

After retirement, Hock became “a ranch owner, recluse, student, and philosopher,” wrote aphorisms, and compiled them in books. His memoirs are One from Many: VISA and the Rise of Chaordic Organization (2005) and Autobiography of a Restless Mind: Reflections on the Human Condition (2012.) His other works include Birth of the Chaordic Age (1999.)
