Inspirational Quotes by Claiborne Pell (American Politician)

Claiborne de Borda Pell (1918–2009,) was an American politician. He served as a Democratic Party U.S. Senator from Rhode Island and created a federal education grant.

Born in New York City, Pell attended Princeton, joined the Foreign Service, and worked as an investment banker for much of the 1950s before entering politics in 1960.

Pell served as a U.S. senator from Rhode Island 1961–97. As chair of the Foreign Relations Committee for seven years, he opposed the Vietnam War, supported nuclear-arms reductions, and opposed military intervention in Latin America and Lebanon.

Pell is celebrated as the creator of the Basic Educational Opportunity Grants (renamed Pell Grants in 1980) program that has provided financial grants to help millions of middle- and lower-income Americans attend college. Pell also spearheaded legislation that established the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities in 1965.
