Inspirational Quotes by John Welwood (American Psychologist)

John Welwood (1943–2019) was an American psychologist, psychotherapist, teacher, and author, known for integrating psychological and spiritual concepts. He specialized in the psychology of awakening, relationships as a contemplative practice, and embodied presence. He coined the term “spiritual bypassing,” the inclination “to use spiritual ideas and practices to sidestep or avoid facing unresolved emotional issues.”

Born in San Francisco, Welwood received a PhD in clinical psychology from the University of Chicago in 1974. Welwood was motivated at a young age by the pioneering Buddhist teachers D. T. Suzuki and Alan Watts. A pioneer in East-West psychology, Welwood explored the relationships between Buddhist awakening and growth in psychotherapy.

Welwood authored eight books, including The Meeting East-West Psychology (1979,) Awakening the Heart (1983,) Journey of the Heart (1990,) Love and Awakening (1996,) Toward a Psychology of Awakening (2000,) and Perfect Love, Imperfect Relationships (2006.)
