Inspirational Quotes by R. David Thomas (American Entrepreneur)

Rex David Thomas (1932–2002) was an American businessman, philanthropist, and fast-food tycoon. He was the founder and chief executive officer of Wendy’s, a hamburger chain. He appeared as a folksy character in over 800 commercial advertisements for the chain 1989–2002.

Born in Atlantic City, New Jersey, Thomas was a high school dropout (he passed the G.E.D. exam and earned a high school diploma at 71.) He began his career running four Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurants. He briefly served as regional director for Kentucky Fried Chicken, then helped found the Arthur Treacher’s Fish and Chips chain.

In 1969, Thomas opened his first Wendy’s Restaurant in Columbus, Ohio, naming his franchise after his eight-year-old daughter Melinda Lou, whose nickname was “Wendy.” Thomas focused Wendy’s successful marketing and advertising on simple, good-tasting food. Within a decade, there were 1,000 Wendy’s. By 2001, Wendy’s was the third-largest hamburger chain in the world, with over 5,300 franchises in 30 countries.

Adopted as a baby, Thomas was a well-known advocate for adoption. He founded the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption, even persuading older, disabled, or otherwise less-attractive potential parents.
