Frank Charles Laubach (1884–1970) was an American missionary, educator, and literacy advocate best known for creating the “Each One Teach One” method. His approach helped millions of people around the world learn to read.
Born in Benton, Pennsylvania, he studied at Princeton University and Union Theological Seminary, earning his PhD from Columbia University in 1915. In the 1930s, he began Congregational Christian missionary work in the Philippines, developing literacy programs for the Maranao people. His method encouraged newly literate individuals to teach others, resulting in widespread literacy gains.
In 1955, he established Laubach Literacy, which grew into a global movement. It later merged into ProLiteracy Worldwide in 2002, continuing his legacy.
Laubach wrote extensively on both literacy and spirituality. His method and its applications in Southern Asia, India, and Latin America are detailed in India Shall Be Literate (1940,) Teaching the World to Read (1948,) and Thirty Years with the Silent Billion (1961.) His spiritual insights appear in Letters by a Modern Mystic (1937) and Channels of Spiritual Power (1955.)
