Inspirational Quotes by Charles Saatchi (British Businessman, Art Collector)

Charles Saatchi (b.1943) is an Iraqi-born British advertising executive and an important collector and patron of contemporary art. He is the co-founder of the advertising agency Saatchi & Saatchi with his brother Maurice.

Born into a Jewish family in Baghdad, Saatchi immigrated to London in 1947. At age 18, he began to work as a copywriter in the advertising trade. With Maurice, Charles founded Saatchi & Saatchi in 1970. The brothers developed the business, and by 1986 it was the world’s largest advertising agency. It was well known as an early proponent of global advertising. Its campaigns even helped the Margaret Thatcher years. The brothers were forced out in 1995, but they soon opened the smaller firm of M&C Saatchi.

By the early 1980s, Charles had built one of the most valued private collections of contemporary paintings and sculptures, including works of prominent contemporary American and European artists. In 1985, he opened the Saatchi Gallery of Contemporary Art at the London County Hall. He also sponsored the Young British Artists (YBAs,) allowing visual artists like Damien Hirst and Tracey Emin to exhibit together in London.

Saatchi’s publications include Be the Worst You Can Be: Life’s Too Long for Patience and Virtue (2012) and Beyond Belief; Racist, Sexist, Rude, Crude, and Dishonest (2015.) Biographies include Ivan Fallon’s The Brothers: The Rise and Rise of Saatchi … Saatchi (1988) and Rita Hatton and John A. Walker’s Supercollector: A Critique of Charles Saatchi (2000.)
