Inspirational Quotes by Alice Munro (Canadian Writer)

Alice Munro (b.1931,) originally Alice Anne Laidlaw, is a Canadian short-story writer and novelist. This winner of the 2013 Nobel Prize in Literature is celebrated for her exquisitely drawn narratives.

Born and brought up in Wingham, Ontario, Munro attended the University of Western Ontario. She wrote short stories from an early age, waiting until she was ready to write novels.

Munro’s many stories, recognized as among the finest of their kind, are known for their precise imagery and narrative style, depicting the depth and complexities of everyday people’s emotional lives. They are often set in rural and semi-rural Ontario, the landscape of her childhood, or feature women who have escaped from such backgrounds. Her many collections of stories include Dance of the Happy Shades (1968,) Something I’ve Been Meaning to Tell You (1974,) The Progress of Love (1987,) Selected Stories (1996,) Hateship, Friendship, Courtship, Loveship, Marriage (2002,) Runaway (2004,) and The View from Castle Rock (2007.)

Munro’s only novel is Lives of Girls and Women (1971,) a series of interrelated coming-of-age stories. Compilations of previously published material include Selected Stories (1996) and Family Furnishings: Selected Stories, 1995–2014 (2014.)

St. Lawrence University’s Robert Thacker wrote Alice Munro: Writing Her Lives: A Biography (2005.)
