Inspirational Quotes by Mark McCormack (American Sports Agent)

Mark Hume McCormack (1930–2003) was an American lawyer and sports agent who pioneered the sports marketing industry. He was the founder and chair of International Management Group (IMG,) the world’s most successful sports agency.

Born in Chicago, McCormack graduated from the College of William & Mary and Yale Law School and served in the United States Army.

McCormack started IMG by arranging appearances, endorsements, and licensing of golfer Arnold Palmer’s name and image, increasing Palmer’s annual income from $60,000 to more than half a million dollars with global celebrity status within two years. IMG soon drew golfers Gary Player and Jack Nicklaus into the fold before moving into other sports, notably tennis, and later to entertainers like Itzhak Perlman and fashion models like Niki Taylor and Lauren Hutton.

IMG persuaded businesses of the potential of these stars, creating the celebrity endorsement culture. IMG produced sales of $1.15 billion in 1997 with 2,250 employees in 33 countries. Critics blamed IMG and other athlete representation firms for rendering money more important than glory.

McCormack’s publications include What They Don’t Teach You at Harvard Business School (1986,) Staying Street Smart in the Internet Age (2000,) and Never Wrestle with a Pig and Ninety Other Ideas to Build Your Business and Career (2001.)
