Inspirational Quotes by Louis Dudek (Canadian Poet, Publisher)

Louis Dudek (1918–2001) was a Canadian poet noted for his development of the non-narrative long poem. He was also a highly influential editor and critic, essayist, polemicist, critic, and commentator.

Born in Montreal, Quebec, in a Catholic family emigrated from Poland, Dudek got his B.A. from McGill University, worked briefly in advertising before obtaining a PhD from Columbia University. He joined McGill’s Department of English in 1951 and established himself promptly on the literary scene with his long poems Europe (1954; a travelogue poem,) The Transparent Sea (1956,) and En Mexico (1958.) Laughing Stalks (1958) is a social satire that includes parodies of Canadian poets and critics.

Dudek’s Cross Section (1980) is an anthology of poems written between 1940 and 1980. His other verse works include the long poems Continuation I (1981) and Continuation II (1990) and the poetry collections Infinite Worlds (1988,) Small Perfect Things (1991,) The Caged Tiger (1997,) and Surface of Time (2000.)

Dudek’s prose works include The Theory of the Image in Modern Poetry (1981,) Ideas for Poetry (1983,) and In Defence of Art (1988; a collection of critical essays and reviews.) His concise, demanding essays on literary criticism were collected in various volumes, notably in Selected Essays and Criticism (1978) and in a special issue of Open Letter (1981.)

Dudek was a prominent figure in Canadian small-press publishing. He co-founded Contact Press, Delta Canada, and D.C. Books (all small presses,) and the McGill Poetry Series. From 1957–66, he also published his own literary journal, Delta.
