Barbra Streisand (b.1942,) originally Barbara Joan Streisand, is an American singer, actress, and film director. One of the icons of American cinema and popular culture, this winner of two Oscars and eight Golden Globes has been performing and singing on the stage, television, and in motion pictures, as well as recording popular music for over three decades.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, Streisand began her career after winning an amateur Greenwich Village nightclub competition. She gained instant acclaim and a New York Critics Award for her Broadway début I Can Get It For You Wholesale (1962.)

Streisand became a star in 1964 in the Broadway musical Funny Girl and won an Oscar for best actress for her performance in the film adaptation Funny Girl (1968.) Hello Dolly! (1969) and On A Clear Day You Can See Forever (1970) were filmed musicals. She received a special Broadway Tony Award in 1970 as ‘actress of the decade.’ Her notable non-musical films include The Owl and the Pussycat (1970) and What’s Up Doc? (1972.)

Streisand later played the lead in A Star is Born (1976;) the film’s song ‘Evergreen,’ composed by Streisand, won an Oscar. With Yentl (1983,) Streisand became the first woman to co-write, produce, direct, and lead in a motion picture. The Prince of Tides (1991,) which she directed, was nominated for seven Academy Awards.

Streisand is noted for her outspokenness, liberal politics, and philanthropy. The Broadway theater manager and biographer Tom Santopietro wrote The Importance of Being Barbra (2006.)
