Inspirational Quotes by Hester Thrale (Welsh Writer)

Hester Thrale (1741–1821,) fully Hester Lynch Thrale Piozzi, née Salusbury, was a Welsh-born British diarist, author, and patron of the arts. She is an important source on Dr. Samuel Johnson and 18th-century English life.

Born at Bodvel Hall, Caernarvonshire, Wales, Thrale was tutored in Latin, modern languages, logic, and rhetoric. She trained for a literary career, wrote and translated poems, and in 1762 published an essay and poem in St. James’s Chronicle. Her first marriage to Henry Thrale, a prosperous Southwark brewer bore twelve children in fourteen years. After his death, she married Gabriel Mario Piozzi, a music teacher.

Thrale met such literary figures as Samuel Johnson, James Boswell, Bishop Thomas Percy, and Oliver Goldsmith as part of the London High Society. Samuel Johnson often vested the family estate in Streatham Park outside London. Their friendship made her a literary celebrity.

Thrale is remembered for her Anecdotes of the Late Samuel Johnson (1786,) Letters to and from the late Dr. Johnson (1788,) and her diary Thraliana (1942.) She also wrote a popular history book and a dictionary.
