Steve Stiles (1943–2020,) fully Stephen Willis Stiles, was an American cartoonist and writer. A Hugo Award-winning comic fan artist, he was recognized for his work on the popular post-apocalyptic dinosaur series “Xenozoic Tales.”
Born in Manhattan, New York, Stiles earned a degree from the School of Visual Arts. He did a two-year Army stint in the mid-1960s; he used his artistic talents to liven up the Army’s manuals for rifles and other devices.
Stiles later worked full-time as an artist in Baltimore, freelancing for underground fan magazines such as the Kitchen Sink Press and Last Gasp. DC Comics and Marvel also published him.
Stiles’s catchphrase, “Death is nature’s way of telling you when to stop,” had been re-printed more than 50 times, including on a fountain at a Los Angeles nightclub.
