Inspirational Quotes by Lawrence Hargrave (Australian Aviation Pioneer)

Lawrence Hargrave (1850–1915) was a British-born Australian engineer, explorer, astronomer, inventor, and aeronautical pioneer. He was the inventor of the box kite, which significantly improved the lift to drag ratio of early gliders and was influential in the first generation of heavier-than-air aircraft.

Born in Greenwich, London, England, Hargrave arrived in Sydney in 1865 and spent five years exploring New Guinea before being appointed to the Sydney Observatory (1878.) He resigned in 1883 to devote his time to aeronautical experiments.

In 1893, Hargrave developed the box kite to produce a wing form used in early aircraft. In 1894, four tethered kites successfully lifted 16 feet from the ground. His later work on curved wing surfaces presaged the wing shape of the Wright brothers’ Kitty Hawk aircraft of 1903.

Hargrave also designed a radial rotary engine in 1899, the predecessor of the engine, which drove most aircraft in the early days of aviation. His other projects included wave-driven ships and a one-wheel gyroscopic car.
