Inspirational Quotes by Antonin Sertillanges (French Catholic Philosopher)

Antonin-Gilbert Sertillanges (1863–1948,) born Antonin-Dalmace Sertillanges, was a French Catholic philosopher and spiritual writer. His literary work examined the moral theory of Thomas Aquinas.

Born in Clermont-Ferrand in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, Sertillanges took the name Antonin-Gilbert when he joined the Dominican order. In 1893, he established the Revue Thomiste (‘Thomism Review’) to help interpret Thomism, the philosophical and theological school of Thomas Aquinas. Sertillanges later became a professor of moral philosophy at the Institut Catholique de Paris.

Sertillanges produced over 30 works, but he is best known for The Intellectual Life: Its Spirit, Conditions, Methods (1948,) a pedagogy book on structuring one’s life to advance as a scholar, and What Jesus Saw from the Cross (1948,) which drew upon the time Sertillanges spent living in Jerusalem.

Begin by creating within you a zone of silence, a habit of recollection, a will of renunciation and detachment which puts you entirely at the disposal of work; acquire that state of soul unburdened by desire and self-will which is the state of grace of the intellectual worker. Without that you will do nothing, at least nothing worth while.
