Jane Stanton Hitchcock (1946–2025,) née Jane Johnston Crowley, was an American novelist, playwright, and screenwriter whose sharp, satirical mysteries exposed the hidden tensions of high society. Her work is distinguished by its blend of suspense, social critique, and dark humor, and her novels continue to draw readers with their incisive portraits of privilege, deception, and upper-crust intrigue.
Born in New York City, she attended Sarah Lawrence College, where she studied the liberal arts and developed a lasting interest in writing and theater. Her early career centered on playwriting—producing works such as Grace and The Custom of the Country—before she moved into screenwriting and ultimately fiction. Her début novel, Trick of the Eye (1992,) earned nominations for both the Edgar Award and the Hammett Prize, establishing her reputation for elegant, psychologically layered mysteries.
She went on to publish acclaimed novels including The Witches’ Hammer (1994) and Social Crimes (2002,) which satirized elite social circles she knew firsthand. Her later bestsellers—One Dangerous Lady (2005,) Mortal Friends (2009,) and Bluff (2019,) winner of the Hammett Prize—further solidified her standing. Her work also extended to stage and screen, including the screenplays for Our Time (1974) and First Love (1977.)
