Inspirational Quotes by Saul Steinberg (American Cartoonist)

Saul Steinberg (1914–99) was a Romanian-born American cartoonist and illustrator. A self-described “a writer who draws,” he is best known for his graphic satire for The New Yorker, most notably View of the World from 9th Avenue. This famous and much-imitated illustration exemplifies the stereotypical New Yorker’s notion that Manhattan is the center of the world.

Born in a Jewish family in Râmnicu Sarat near Bucharest, Romania, Steinberg studied sociology and psychology at Bucharest and architecture in Milan, earning a doctorate at the Reggio Politecnico in 1940. He published his cartoons in Italian magazines such as Bertoldo 1936–39. He left Italy when the Fascist regime began instituting anti-Semitic laws in 1942 and settled in America. He was naturalized and joined the U.S. Navy in 1943.

After World War II, Steinberg worked with The New Yorker for more than 50 years as a freelance artist, cartoonist, and illustrator. He became a nationally known graphic artist and cartoonist. His witty and satirical drawings, which are filled with unexpected ideas and images and often include eclectic doodlings speaking forms of fantastic words, appeared regularly in The New Yorker magazine. He also exhibited his drawings in Paris, New York City, and other cities.

Collections of Steinberg’s illustrations were published as All in Line (1945,) The Passport (1954,) The New World (1965,) and The Discovery of America (1993.)
