Inspirational Quotes by Robert Hillyer (American Poet)

Robert Silliman Hillyer (1895–1961) was an American poet, critic, translator, and educator associated with the traditionalist wing of early twentieth-century poetry. Known for his formal precision and lyrical style, he resisted the rise of modernism and championed classical meter and clarity. Hillyer gained national recognition when he received the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry for Collected Verse (1934,) a milestone that solidified his place among prominent American poets of his era.

Born in East Orange, New Jersey, Hillyer was educated at Harvard University, where he earned both his undergraduate and graduate degrees while developing his early poetic voice. At Harvard he became part of a literary circle that included future luminaries, and he later returned to the university as an instructor in English. His initial career combined teaching with writing, leading to early publications such as The Five Books of Youth (1917,) which reflected his experiences as an ambulance driver in World War I. Throughout the 1920s and 1930s he continued to publish widely, producing works like The Hills Give Promise (1920) and The Coming Forth by Day (1923,) while also contributing essays and criticism to major literary journals.

Hillyer’s later career included teaching positions at Kenyon College and the University of Delaware, where he remained an outspoken critic of modernist poets.
