Inspirational Quotes by Shirley Temple (American Actress, Diplomat)

Shirley Temple (1928–2014,) in full Shirley Jane Temple, married name Shirley Temple Black, was an American actress and diplomat. She was an internationally admired child star of the 1930s and 1940s, best known for sentimental musicals.

Born in Santa Monica, California, she was a precociously talented baby and appeared in a succession of short films from the age of three-and-a-half, graduating to full stardom with a leading role in little Miss Marker (1934.) For much of the decade, she was one of Hollywood’s greatest box-office attractions. An unspoilt personality who sang, danced, and did impressions, she captivated Depression-era audiences, becoming the world’s favorite golden-haired moppet in such films as Curly Top (1935,) Dimples (1936,) Wee Willie Winkie (1937,) Heidi (1937,) Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm (1938,) and Little Princess (1939.)

Temple’s appeal faded, however, and she never achieved the charisma of her childhood—when attempts at an adult comeback faltered, she retired from the screen. Two television series, The Shirley Temple Story Book (1958) and The Shirley Temple Show (1960,) proved disappointing.

Involved with Republican Party politics, she was appointed the U.S. representative to the United Nations General Assembly in 1969. She served as ambassador to Ghana 1974–76, White House chief of protocol 1976–77, and ambassador to Czechoslovakia 1989–92.

Temple received an honorary Academy Award in 1934 and the Screen Actors Guild’s lifetime achievement award in 2005. Her autobiographies include My Young Life (1945) and Child Star (1988.)
