Rodney George Laver (b.1938) is an Australian tennis legend, widely regarded as one of the greatest players in the sport’s history. He remains the only player to win two Grand Slams, solidifying his dominance across multiple surfaces and generations.
Born in Rockhampton, Queensland, Laver was a powerful, agile, left-handed player. He won the Wimbledon singles title as both an amateur and a professional. After claiming the Wimbledon title in 1961, he captured a Grand Slam in 1962 by winning all four major tournaments—Australian, French, British, and U.S. Turning professional the same year, he won the professional world singles title five times between 1964 and 1970. When Wimbledon opened to professionals in 1968, he triumphed again and secured a second Grand Slam in 1969.
Laver authored several books, including Rod Laver: A Memoir (2013,) The Education of a Tennis Player (2010,) and How to Play Championship Tennis (1965.) Rod Laver: An Autobiography (2016) offers insights into his career and personal life.
